Families should start the process at least 9 months in advance of the desired date for baptism.
Baptism is the gateway to the rest of the sacraments of the Church, and as such, ensuring that families are properly disposed to introduce their child(ren) to a sacramental life is essential.
Therefore, parents wishing to have their child(ren) baptized must:
– be REGISTERED (please see the Parish Registration page for specific information);
– REGULARLY ATTEND; and
– SUPPORT (either with Envelopes or direct giving) the parish for at least 3 months in order to schedule a baptismal date. (Anonymous contributions are not verifiable.)
All families are also required to have a meeting with Father Bob before a date can be confirmed.
All of the above are necessary whether the child is being baptized in St Teresa’s or are requesting the letter of permission to have your child baptized at another church.
Baptism Faith Sessions
The Faith Session is a gathering of first-time parents in preparation of the Baptism of their babies. It is a small information sharing session where parishioners meet one another and share their ideas and discuss the theology on Baptism. Parents who have had a previous child baptized at St Teresa’s are excused provided they attended this session within the last 5 years.
For more information, please call the parish office at 908 277 3700.
The Sacrament of Baptism requires the selection of at least one official Godparent/Sponsor, but two (one from each sex) can serve. Parents should ensure that the person(s) they desire to serve in this role for their children actually qualify BEFORE asking them. No more than two official Sponsors can be listed in the baptismal register, however parents can ceremonially name as many Godparents as they like.
Because Sponsors serve in an important and official role not only for the child(ren) but also for the Church, they must:
- Be at least be 16 years of age themselves;
- Have received the Sacraments of Baptism, Confirmation and Eucharist;
- Live a life in harmony with the Church, which means they actively practice their faith, support and are involved in the life of their parish.
Registered, active parishioners from St Teresa seeking to serve as Sponsors will be known to our parish staff and should complete the form entitled Requesting a Sponsor Certificate.
Those who live in other parishes must be able to get a sealed Sponsor Certification, signed by the Pastor of their home parish or the Pastor from the parish where they actually practice their faith.
Parents must ensure that the Sponsor(s) qualify before submitting the name because those who cannot present the official certification will not be able to serve as an official Sponsor, but may be able to serve as a Witness.
Scheduling the Baptism
Please keep in mind that baptisms are not scheduled during Advent and Lent. Please do not make any definite reservations until you have received the confirmation letter for the baptismal date. The dates available for Baptism are discussed at the meeting with Father Bob and only when all of the above prerequisites are satisfied.
To begin the process, or to request the letter of permission to have a baptism celebrated elsewhere, please download, complete and return this form along with at least one original church sealed sponsor form and a copy of the child’s birth certificate to the parish office at:
St Teresa of Avila
306 Morris Avenue
Summit, NJ 07901
Dates are only confirmed once all documents are submitted and all of the above-noted requirements are satisfied.
Thank you for your kind understanding and again, congratulations.
